Alexander; and commissioned on 22 August 1970, Cmdr. Jack Campbell in command. ''Whipple'' conducted sea trials from 24 to 26 September before returning to the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington, for fitting-out availability from 27 to 30 September.
